Empowerment Over Uncertainty: Building Long-Haul Career Confidence in the AEC Industry
An Unexpected Path on a Nature Walk
Before I start my workday, I take a walk for about an hour. It helps me focus, quiet my mind, and get centered for whatever lies ahead.
Yesterday, I decided to walk Upper Newport Back Bay — one of my favorite places. With clear skies and another late-spring warm-up, I felt adventurous and chose a different route. I headed east on the paved pedestrian-bike path, taking in the sights of the ecological reserve and migratory birds.
Some might find the overhead airplane noise distracting, but I’ve learned that keeping perspective goes a long way on these walks — and in life.
As I reached the Jamboree Avenue intersection, I noticed the Eastbluff neighborhood ahead, curving around the reserve. Confidently, I continued toward Eastbluff, thinking I’d easily complete the loop and be back to my car within an hour.
Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve — where a simple morning walk inspired reflection on career visibility and empowerment in uncertain times.
From Certainty to Uncertainty
About 1.5 miles into the opposite side of Upper Back Bay, things shifted. I realized I hadn’t hydrated enough for a longer walk. My mouth grew dry, the sun intensified, and the heat started to sink into my black workout capris. My skin burned beneath my racerback top.
What started as an enjoyable nature walk soon turned into a moment of uncertainty: Could I finish? Should I turn back?
I looked across the bay and calculated how long it would take to walk back to my car — now far across the water. I had already walked more than three miles in 75 minutes. Tempted to keep going, the wiser choice was to turn around. The heat was rising fast, and I needed to prioritize long-term strength over short-term pride.
Walkers, runners, cyclists — young and old — passed me by. It reminded me that overcoming challenges in times of uncertainty is not about competition. It’s about recognizing what fuels true empowerment — making smart choices, adapting, and building resilience.
The AI Frontier: Why Empowerment Matters Now
The past 18 months have been some of the most humbling in my career. The technology frontier is evolving daily, especially with the rise of AI in marketing and business development across the AEC industry.
There are countless articles predicting that professionals without AI training will be left behind. But the reality is more nuanced. It’s not just about learning AI tools — it’s about applying human-centered reasoning alongside AI capabilities:
Developing recommendations
Designing workflows
Communicating value to firm leadership and colleagues
In many firms, large and small, understanding and deploying AI still comes down to individual initiative. Each professional must seek out the training to stay competitive and visible.
